Judge Patricia Padilla of the National District has sentenced Karim Abu Naba’a, the controversial former boyfriend of President Leonel Fernandez’s oldest daughter, Nicole, to two months on remand. He is accused of threatening to kill Hector Antonio Baez Garcia.
He has two other outstanding cases against him in other courts that will now be sent to trial, one for the same issue and one for the attempted murder of lawyer Gustavo Mejia Ricart with a submachine gun. According to news reports at time, Abu Naba’a’s own bodyguards prevented the tragedy.
Abu Naba’a was arrested last week when he arrived in the country from Miami via Las Americas airport, and was taken to the jail at the Palace of Justice. He had been sought by the authorities since 15 April 2011, accused of defaulting on a sales deal of a Ferrari Enzo valued at US$1.5 million.
In addition to remand in prison, RD$10 million bail was imposed in relation to the charges of fraud and using forged documents.
His father, international businessman Mustafa Abu Naba’a rejected the judge’s decision, saying that the authorities’ persecution of his son was selective and that the accusations were for “nonsense.”
