The president of the Civil Aviation Board (JAC), Luis Paulino Rodriguez Ariza has announced that the JAC has approved Air Tran and Sun Country Airways to operate routes to and from the United States to Punta Cana airport, as reported in Listin Diario.
He said that the increase of charter airlines was an excellent sign that 2013 would continue to see a growth in the number of tourists visiting the country and that this year would end with around 10,500,000 passengers being transported by air from all the country’s airports.
He said that several foreign airlines, including JetBlue, Copa, Delta, VRG and GOL had increased their frequencies and added new routes.
He revealed that at the moment there are 258 regular routes and 588 charter routes operating from the country, with 55 regular scheduled airlines and 122 charter airlines connecting more than 300 destinations from the seven main international airports in the country.
The Dominican Republic has the most variety of airlines serving local airports in the entire Caribbean. This can be attributed to the successful open skies policy of the Dominican government over the years.
