Santiago was relatively peaceful over the weekend

The plan put into effect by the Emergency Operations Center (COE) met its objectives in the nation’s second largest city. Santiago had reported no fatalities or major accidents as El Caribe went to press. Francisco Arias, the head of the Civil Defense office in Santiago, told reporters that there were 12 traffic accidents, eleven of them involving motorcycles, but that no fatalities were reported. No alcohol poisoning cases were reported either. “The New Year’s weekend was very good for Santiago,” said Arias. The Civil Defense official congratulated all of the volunteers and other workers who contributed to the safe weekend. In the local hospital, the Jose Maria Cabral y Baez Regional University Hospital, 20 cases were reported in the emergency room, most involving stab wounds incurred during fights, or injuries sustained in a traffic accident.
