Businessman released, but more problems ahead

A National District Judge, Patricia Padilla has overturned the demand for remand in prison imposed last week and released the Dominican-American businessman of Arab origin Karim Abu Naba’a Nicolas. In its place she imposed bail of five million pesos, an exit ban and periodic court appearances.

Abu Naba’a’s release came about following an agreement to pay a debt he owed for a painting.

However, later the same day, yesterday Wednesday 2 January, lawyer Isidro Frias Castillo deposited another writ against Abu Naba’a for fraud, abuse of trust and death threats against his client Pedro Antonio Valdez Vizcaino. They are accusing him of buying a SUV in 2011 for RD$850,000 but only paying US$5,000 and the balance by check that subsequently bounced. Castillo said that his clients would also be prepared to drop the case for a financial settlement.
