Check the boat before heading to sea

A group of 16 tourists from Honduras learned the hard way that they have to double check to make sure their tour boat is equipped for an outing at sea. As reported in El Nacional, the group of 16 that included Roosevelt Aviles, mayor of the city of Talanga and several Honduran government officials, found themselves drifting out to sea after hiring a boat for a sea outing in la Romana. The Aviles family from Honduras say they will sue Artilleira, the company that rented the ill-equipped boat. When at sea the engine failed, and they then noticed they had no radio equipment, no life-jackets or GPS on board. The group included the director of the Honduran First Lady’s Office, and the minister counsellor of the Embassy of Honduras in the Dominican Republic. They also blame the captain of the boat, nicknamed Melaza, for refusing to be towed into port.

After two hours adrift at sea, they were rescued by several boats, including one on which former Minister of Public Works Victor Diaz Rua and Omar Fernandez, son of former President Leonel Fernandez were on board.
