Minister of Higher Education Ligia Amada Melo says that 90% of applicants for the Instituto Tecnologico Superior Comunitario (Itesco), the new community college in San Luis in eastern Santo Domingo, have failed the mathematics admission test. She said that 70% failed the Spanish part of the admissions test.
Classes at the college begin on Monday, 14 January. Some 1,000 students will be the first to be admitted at the college.
Melo said that a special preparatory course would be offered by the university where students will be able to study for four months to improve their scholastic level in order to pass the POMA admission test. A report will also be made to address the deficiencies at the schools from where the applicants had come from. She said that the statistics show that the secondary education system needs to be revised.
Melo said that courses have been filled with students at 19 of the 23 careers offered at the ICTS. There is especially interest in health and information technology related courses.
