Prosecutors being fired

In the last six months at least 49 public prosecutors have faced disciplinary or criminal proceedings and dismissal for supposed acts of corruption, bribery, protection of criminals, links with drug trafficking and wrongful handling of evidence and cases.

According to the statistics from the General Inspectorate of the Public Prosecution Service, 30 assistant prosecutors have been subject to disciplinary proceedings, and nine part time judges have been dismissed since June and 10 are facing criminal charges, for which the Public Prosecution Service is asking for remand.

The latest case was reported last week when the Attorney General, Francisco Dominguez Brito announced the arrest of two assistant Prosecutors in San Pedro de Macoris, Soraine Vargas and Pedro Garcia, who were reportedly caught in the act of taking a bribe of RD$500,000 from a defendant’s family.

The money they received had been marked, following an investigation and operation due to previous complaints of irregularities concerning them.
