With the holidays over the nation now turns its attention to the second phase of the Winter League Baseball Tournament. At one point over the weekend three teams were tied in first place and the suddenly crippled Estrellas languishing in last place, far from the top. The Aguilas, Toros and Leones started the weekend tied atop the standings, but the Aguilas lost to Escogido, while the Estrella won their first game, beating the Toros, 3-1. Then, on Saturday, 5 January the Aguilas got a 5 for 5 performance from Leury Garcia to defeat the Toros in eleven innings and Escogido pushed the Estrellas further down with a 3-2 win. The games on Sunday, 6 January were interesting for a while. The Aguilas and Estrellas battled 0-0 for three-and-a-half innings until the Aguilas, playing at home before a huge home crowd, exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and going on to an 11-4 win over the Estrellas. The Leones del Escogido won their third in a row, 6-4, over the Toros.
