In a symbolic event at the Nelly Biaggi School in the El Almirante sector of Santo Domingo East yesterday, Monday 7 January, attended by President Danilo Medina, the government launched the learning phase of the National Literacy Plan called “Quisqueya Learns with You” which aims to teach 851,000 young people and adults to read and write over a two-year period.
In his inaugural speech, Pedro Luis Castellanos, the National Literacy Board technical team coordinator, said that each provincial and municipal literacy board was beginning the program all over the country. He stressed that according to the latest reports, as of yesterday, Monday 7 January they had organized 6,054 groups for training their literacy teachers known as “alphabetizers”. They have also produced the teaching materials so they are ready to begin the first round with some 60,000 to 70,000 people taking part. They hope to reach their goal of 851,000 within two years.
