Haitians still waiting at the border

Talks are continuing today, Wednesday 9 January at the Dajabon border crossing where hundreds of Haitians are trying to return to the Dominican Republic to work without the required legal documentation.

Father Regino Martinez SJ has rejected a proposal by the Dominican Immigration Director, Jose Ricardo Taveras to allow 280 Haitians to enter who have expired permits, who would then be taken immediately to the Migration Department to renew them, but the rest have to stay in Haiti.

Martinez said it would still leave 1,080 Haitians who had travelled home to see their families but were not allowed to return.

Taveras said that according to his information, between 5,000 and 6,000 people were waiting to cross the border but said that 1,166 people had crossed with the correct documents.

He said that as Director of Immigration he could not allowed thousands of foreigners to enter the country illegally and that he was just applying the law.
