After delivering his New Year congratulations to President Medina yesterday, Tuesday 8 January, the United States Ambassador in the DR Raul Izaguirre said that the accusations made by inmate Sobeida Felix Morel in her 2011 statement should be investigated by the authorities. Sobeida Felix Morel was sentenced for asset laundering and drug trafficking charges. She is known as the lover of Puerto Rican capo Jose David Figueroa Agosto, in jail in Puerto Rico after the case went public with the discovery of US$4.5 million in a vehicle in the possession of Felix Morel.
He said that he was sure that this was happening and went on to say that drug trafficking affected all levels and countries across the world, and could corrupt even members of government.
Izaguirre also said that they would increase resources given to the Dominican Republic each year to fight drug trafficking, although he did not say by how much. Last year the US gave US$15 million for this purpose.
