People smuggling case to be investigated

The Department of Migration and the Prosecutor General Office has announced they would launch an investigation against businessman Rafael Emilio Alonzo Luna who is accused of people smuggling. A group of former employees at his coconut processing plant have set up camp outside the Ministry of Labor in Santo Domingo to demand severance payments. The workers, all Haitians, told reporters that they were smuggled into the country by the company with the complicity of military personnel posted on the roadways from Haiti. The Haitians worked at the manufacturing plant and said they were fired without receiving their severance payments. The case brings out into the open an all-too-common case of smuggling of Haitian workers.
