Update on the National Literacy Plan

Although the National Literacy Plan officially started on Monday, 7 January it has not actually begun in several places.

In Villa Mella, there are 30 learning centers but only 15 students and in Los Guaricanos 17. In the National District it has not yet started, although according to Teresa Magdalena Mazara, coordinator of the National District board there will be a meeting to decide where the centers will be located.

The deputy director of Adult Education at the Education Ministry, Deolegario Tapia has said that in most places discussions are still taking place with the students in order to agree where and when the classes will be held, on what days and on the schedules.

There are also problems in Santiago as several teachers have resigned and complained about irregularities, saying that they had been told they would receive RD$1,450, but they have only been given RD$200 each for fares.
