In an interview on the Uno+Uno TV show, Sobeida Felix Morel’s lawyer, Felix Portes, said that his client is concerned about her safety and that of her family since the media published details of the revelations that she gave to the Public Prosecution department, to the extent that she is now in solitary confinement in jail. He said that he deplored the release of such sensitive information because of the risks it entailed for the former lover of Puerto Rican drug capo Jose Figueroa Agosto.
He went on to say that the authorities should check the revelations in the press to establish whether they were truthful. In the allegations, provided in exchange for a lighter sentence for money laundering, Morel revealed, among other things, that the former PRD presidential candidate, Miguel Vargas, had received US$300,000 from Figueroa Agosto for his campaign as well as a Mitsubishi SUV.
Meanwhile, National District prosecutor Yeni Berenice Reynoso told Listin Diario that several people were being investigated in connection with the information provided by Morel, but that statements by an accused person are not in themselves sufficient for making an accusation. She said that they could not investigate the names provided by Morel earlier as they were not contained in her legal charge documentation.
The list was actually handed over by her lawyer, following opposition to Morel being granted parole as the public prosecutor had alleged that she had not fulfilled everything she had agreed to when originally granted a lighter sentence.
Reynoso went on to say that it was not usual for a lawyer to keep an agreement made by the public prosecutor’s office with someone and when asked if she now had the list, she responded that the process had begun.
The decision on Sobeida’s release on parole is expected next week.
