Navy officer suspect in 1,870 kg cocaine case

Elite forces of the National Police and National Drug Control Department are pursuing a navy captain in connection with the shipment of 1,539 packages of cocaine confiscated from a speedboat in the Bay of Ocoa, near Azua. The former navy officer is identified as Jose Arias Cornelio and was arrested, it was announced today. He is said to have worked with four other men. The officer had served a jail sentence in connection with the Paya drug-related massacre where six people were murdered.

The drugs in the recent shipment were said to have been transported from South America by the four men who managed to escape their pursuers after the suspicious speedboat was detected by US Coast Guard forces.
