San Francisco market to be rebuilt

The Presidency has announced that the government will rebuild and extend the old market area in San Francisco de Macoris after it was destroyed in a fire. Some 17 vendors lost their stands and produce at the market. The government announced that RD$37 million in low-interest loans would be provided to the stallholders so they could promptly get back into business, replenish their stocks and keep their employees.

The announcement was made by provincial and municipal authorities of the province, head by Senator Amilcar Romero, governor Miladys Nunez, and city mayor of San Francisco de Macoris Felix Rodriguez. The market installations date back to 1813. The government announced the facade would be rebuilt to maintain its historic legacy, but with two levels would be added where the governor’s offices would be located. President Danilo Medina himself recently visited the site of the fire and offered government support for rebuilding the market.
