Fenatrado says chaos will result from changes

The head of the Fenatrado transport union, Blas Peralta, warned that the restrictions proposed by the Santo Domingo city council for George Washington Avenue (the Malecon) in Santo Domingo would result in chaotic traffic jams on other streets designated for alternative routes for the heavy traffic coming off the docks in the port of Santo Domingo. Peralta said that the use of main arteries such as the Maximo Gomez, 27 de Febrero, Independencia, Kennedy and other avenues would lead to major traffic tie-ups. He told Hoy reporter Juan Ramirez that trucks from the docks would have special permits allowing them to use the Malecon, but others, which use the seafront avenue as their main road to the south west, would have to use other main city avenues. He added that his organization would back the plan for a trial period and give it a chance to be evaluated.
