Visitors to Santo Domingo in March are in for a continued treat of some of the best classical music of all times. While the festival officially opens on 7 February 2013 with a concert conducted by Venezuelan Gustavo Dudamel, the remaining performances are scheduled for March 2013.
Conductor Ramon Tebar with soloist Joshua Bell are also appearing at the Festival on Wednesday, 6 March. The program includes R. Wagner – Overture of the The Flying Dutchman, M. Bruch, Concerto No. 1 for violin and orchestra, G. Mahler, Symphony No. 1 (Titan).
The Festival continues on Saturday, 7 March with conductor Ramon Tebar, soprano Maria Guleghina, for the Giuseppe Verdi Bicentenary Gala with the Festival orchestra and choir. A fourth concert is scheduled for Tuesday, 12 March, with conductor Benjamin Zander, and special appearances by trumpeter Alison Balsom and pianist Antonio Pompa-Baldi. The program for that evening is L. Bernstein – Overture of Candide, D. Shostakovich with Concerto No. 1 for piano and orchestra, A. Piazzolla with Libertango and L. van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5. A fifth concert is scheduled for Thursday, 14 March with the Festival orchestra conducted by Benjamin Zander. Pianist Jue Wang will be playing. On the program is M. Mussorgsky with Prelude to Khovanshchina, S. Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concert No. 2 and D. Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5. The closing concert will be conducted by Ramon Tebar, with cellist Gautier Capucon. The program is P. Dukas’ Sorcerer’s Apprentice, P. I. Tchaikovsky – Variations on a Rococo Theme for cello and orchestra, G. Faure with Elegie for cello and orchestra and M. Mussorgsky with Pictures at an Exhibition, Ravel orchestration.
