JCE overseas offices closed

More than 70 employees in 19 overseas offices have been made redundant by the Central Electoral Board (JCE) as it closes its offices in several countries. According to El Nacional, in letters sent to the employees, the Head of Human Resources at the JCE, Carolina Pena Guzman says that the reduction in personnel is due to a lack of financial resources as their budget has been cut.

The decision to close overseas offices due to a reduction in the JCE budget has been criticized by the overseas Deputies who say that it will cause problems for Dominicans living abroad, and the Hispanic television channels echoed that view. Channel 41 interviewed several Dominicans who asked President Danilo Medina to increase the budget for the JCE, as by closing their offices it will make it difficult to obtain birth certificates and other official documentation.
