More and more Dominicans are using social networks, confirmed by the fact that in the first ten months of this year the number of Internet accounts in the country went up by 58.6%, representing an increase of 710,937 users. According to the Dominican Telecommunications Institute (Indotel) there are now 1,922,225 Internet accounts.
Home telephone lines have increased by 11,091 over the same time period with 1,034,580 in total.
The main means of communication continues to be the cell phone with the number of lines increasing by 76,282 for a total of 8,847,062 cell phone lines. The most popular are prepaid or using phone cards, whereas post-paid, with monthly billing, increased by 57,696 to reach a total of 1,572,889.
Looking at the three main telecoms options, landlines, cell phone and cell and data phone, there are now 9.925,141 lines in existence, which is more than the total population, put at 9.3 million as at the last census
