The Central Electoral Board (JCE) has created a new department to ensure that birth certificates for late registration can be issued more quickly.
The president of the JCE, Roberto Rosario, said that the new department, although based at the JCE, will actually report to National District Public Prosecutor’s department as the law states that in order to issue a late birth certificate the Public Prosecution office need to be consulted.
Following a meeting with National District Prosecutor Yeni Berenice Reynoso earlier this week, Rosario said that the new system should be working from February and anyone needing certificates would just have to go to the one office at the JCE rather than back and forth between the JCE and the Public Prosecutor’s office, saving both time and money.
Reynoso said that people were always complaining about the procedure for obtaining certificates for the late registration of births and deaths and she hoped that this new system would help, especially as in most cases, people who were registering late had limited financial resources.
