The Dominican Federation of Municipalities (Fedomu) and the Sports Ministry have signed an agreement to work together to support the local authorities with the repair and maintenance of sports infrastructure.
Sports Minister Jaime David Fernandez signed the agreement with Fedomu president Juan de Los Santos at the Fedomu headquarters yesterday, Tuesday 15 January.
They will launch a campaign for raising national awareness of the state of sports facilities as well as conducting studies to ensure they are completed, equipped and maintained, including the provision of staff where necessary and both will contribute financially.
De Los Santos, who is also the mayor of Santo Domingo East, welcomed the agreement saying that many sports complexes had been neglected and he did not agree that mayors should be responsible for maintaining and repairing them. Once they have been repaired, however they will be handed over to the local authorities.
