Case against Wessin gets Prosecutor General’s attention

The Prosecutor General Office has presented a formal accusation against the former director of the National Assets Department, Elias Wessin Chavez for irregularities in the management of RD$157 million. Wessin resigned after acento.com.do carried the story that focused primarily on widespread nepotism in the department and millions spent on paying for staff hired for reasons of political patronage. Wessin was a strong supporter of former President Leonel Fernandez and current President Danilo Medina.

When he resigned, the Medina government promoted Wessin’s deputy to the post.

The Prosecutor General has requested a judicial hearing to look into the accusation.

An audit by the governmental Chamber of Accounts revealed irregularities in the management of RD$157 million.
