According to the Central Bank, the Dominican Republic received 4,528,913 tourists during 2012. This number is over a quarter of a million more than in 2011, and nearly all of this increase came from North America (the United States and Canada). The breakdown showed that some 637,000 non-resident Dominicans visited the country, along with 3.9 million non-resident foreigners. The only piece of bad news, according to El Nuevo Diario was the fact that the last quarter showed a fall of 1.6% compared to the previous year. However, this was attributable to the effects of Hurricane Sandy along the East Coast of the United States and the tremendous impact on local economies. There were also fewer flights from Canada and the United States. On the bright side, the country received some 46,000 visitors from South America.
