The Santo Domingo-based Leones del Escogido didn’t give the Aguilas Cibaenas from Santiago a chance. In the playoffs, the capital city team won five straight games of the 9-5 series. The final game, played at the Quisqueya Ball Park in Santo Domingo last night, Tuesday 22 January, ended 3-0. The previous evening, Monday 21 January, the Escogido defeated the Aguilas 9-0 in Santiago. The Escogido now has 15 championships under its belt. The Licey and the Aguilas have won 20 of the 49 championships. In Dominican baseball history, a grand slam has only been achieved on nine previous occasions: 1964-65, 1978-79, 1988-89, 1996-97, 2002-03, 2008-09, 2010-11 and 2012-13. The Escogido was in seven of the playoffs, winning three, including this year’s championship. The team won the right to represent the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean Baseball Championship from 1-7 February in Hermosillo, Mexico.
