Manuel Moquete and Fernando Thiccone, defense lawyers for rap singer Manuel Varet Martes (Vakero), say that they have come to an agreement with the head of the Rehabilitation and Correction Center in San Pedro de Macoris so that Vakero will not have to have his long hair cut until his appeal on the issue has been heard today.
Vakero was taken to jail yesterday, Tuesday 22 January, to complete a three-month remand sentence for alleged violence against his wife, Martha Heredia.
Vakero says he cannot have his hair cut as it is against his Rastafarian religious beliefs. His lawyers also stated that cutting his hair would violate his human rights.
However, despite the agreement to wait until the appeal has been heard, according to the blog Macorisdelmar, following a phone call from the capital, the haircut would take place.
