The Ministry of Public Works and the National District local authorities have started paving the streets in the Colonial City, at a reported cost of RD$60 million.
Public Works Minister Gonzalo Castillo and Mayor Roberto Salcedo made the announcement at a press conference, saying that the Malespin construction company would be responsible for doing the work. Castillo said that this would include repairing the gutters to prevent the streets from flooding. He added that these improvements would represent a boost to the Colonial City by creating more jobs and leading to more prosperity for Dominicans, which is what the President wanted.
Mayor Roberto Salcedo said that the work was part of the plan to develop the Colonial City as an historical center and the problem was that over the years new layers of asphalt had been laid on top of each other, raising the level of the streets higher than the sidewalks, causing problems for street cleaning.
