Diario Libre contributor Alejandro Fernandez writes that today, Thursday 24 January is the first day that residents in the Dominican Republic will be able to request a free check into their credit status provided by Data Credito. Previously the charge was RD$300-RD$500 for the check.
After columns written by him and follow up by the newspaper, the Data Credito and TransUnion bureaus have agreed to open their records to individuals without charge. The bureaus keep financial information on more than three million people, which they sell to banks, stores and anyone carrying out background checks, mainly on the credit applicant’s risk level and economic status.
In his column in Diario Libre today, Fernandez says that the records include the date from when you had credit, the credit limits granted, who granted them and the modality (loan, credit card, store credit or telecom product). It also provides information on how many times you have been late in paying with 30, 60, 90 or 120 days, or if your case has reached legal collection status and the outcome.
He adds that credit bureaus in the Dominican Republic keep information for 84 months (seven years), but after that for the bad credit note to be eliminated, the involved party needs to have paid the debt or it will continue to appear affecting local credit.
To request the information, visit the credit bureaus with your cedula. The telephone numbers are: Data Credito (809) 533-4419 and TransUnion (809) 227-1888. Or write to the promoter of the initiative Alejandro Fernandez at arg@betametrix.com
