The Ministry of the Interior and Police has incinerated 2,478,492 fireworks that were confiscated from vendors during the New Year festivities, Diario Libre reports.
The event took place at the Armed Forces shooting range in Sierra Prieta, Yamasa, Monte Plata province.
The Minister, Jose Ramon Fadul, said that the fireworks had been taken as a result of work carried out by the Firework Control Agency (COFA) and that not one single person had been injured by fireworks during the festivities.
He went on the say that COFA had run a campaign called “Zero Victims”, involving giving talks in 741 schools and colleges throughout the country, attended by 411,252 students. In addition they had visited 6,546 stores and only found 25 with fireworks.
He said that they had confiscated 1,255,741 fireworks in Santo Domingo province and the National District, 1,214,685 in the Cibao region, 6,333 in the south and 1,833 in the east.
