University told to register students

The Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology, Ligia Amada Melo de Cardona has called on the authorities at the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD) to enroll the more than 15,000 students who have been unable to enroll so far due to technical problems with the system, and to do so manually if necessary.

At the same time she has asked them to terminate the contract with their current technology suppliers, who are based overseas, as she understands that the failures are due to a lack of maintenance that is too expensive for the university to carry out.

She said she has advised the UASD to end their contract with the overseas suppliers on many occasions, as there are several companies here that are perfectly capable of doing the same work, as reported in Listin Diario.

El Dia editorializes on the issue, reminding the university that they run on state funds and criticizes the signing of contracts that are against the better interest of taxpayers. The editorialist says that the problem is a too frequent one.
