Ex President Fernandez accused of influence peddling

Former presidential candidate for the minority political party Alianza Pais, Guillermo Moreno filed a complaint yesterday, Thursday 25 January at the National District attorney office requesting an investigation into influence peddling and alleged asset laundering by the former president through his Funglode think tank and university. Moreno was appointed National District prosecutor under the first Fernandez administration (1996-1997) but was removed a year later when investigating administrative corruption.

Moreno claims that Fernandez used his position to receive multi-million dollar donations and kickbacks to Funglode in return for government procurement payments.

The claim also focuses on the relationship between Fernandez and Constructora Hadom, S.A., Constructora Hadom-Haiti, Inmobiliaria Rofi, Constructora Raofi, Constructora Rofi-Panama and Inmobiliaria Hemisferio Panama, which belong to senator Felix Bautista. A parallel judicial investigation against Bautista was recently reopened despite the case after the case was closed by the head of the government administrative corruption department three days before the end of the Fernandez government.

In November Moreno had also filed a case against former Minister of Public Works Victor Diaz Rua, but the judiciary dismissed his complaint.
