Dominican Pedro Martinez has rejoined the Boston Red Sox. The three-time Cy Young Award winner was appointed special assistant to general manager Ben Cherington. The man who is best remembered for his pitching during the legendary 2004 World Series Boston Red Sox four games to none win against the St. Louis Cardinal hopes to make a difference for the team. Martinez made baseball history for his seven shutout innings in Game 3 of the 2004 World Series.
The series was especially important to the Red Sox, which had not won a World Series since 1918. The win was said to have ended the “Curse of the Bambino” that was supposed to have been inflicted on the team when Babe Ruth was sold to the Yankees in 1919.
“This team, this city, it’s in my heart,” he said on Thursday, 24 January after being appointed special assistant to general manager Ben Cherington. “I feel like I can add something and help the team be great again.”
