The latest Gallup-Hoy survey reveals that more than 80% of the population feels that the lack of safety and drug trafficking are increasing, with nearly 90% questioning the security issue. Looking at the issue of safety, 90% of people surveyed in the metropolitan area and in the northern and eastern regions of the country said that insecurity was increasing, with women more perceptive than the men. Adults between 24 and 44 years of age believe that the problem is getting worse.
Overall, 47% disapproved the management of security matters.
In addition, 46.5% expressed dissatisfaction at the way the government combats drug trafficking. President Danilo Medina confirmed the same chief of the Police and director of the anti-drug agency who had served under President Leonel Fernandez.
The poll also showed that over three-quarters of the people questioned believed that the economy is getting worse, and in the east, the bastion of tourism in the country, 77% of the people believe this. Once again the women are more pessimistic than the men. After the new tax reform went into effect, 93% of the population feels that the cost of living will increase and almost 80% think that the jobless rate will increase.
The poll also measured the opinion voting adults have on corruption and 77.5% said that it is on the rise.
Notwithstanding, the new Danilo Medina government is viewed favorably, says the poll. Eight out of ten Dominicans approve of the way that Danilo Medina is handling the government, and 60.5% said that he was “doing better than expected.” Of the sample of 1,200 people interviewed during the last week, Medina’s approval rating was at 83.3%. Over 80% of the people surveyed said that Medina has set forth his plans clearly, and conducted his programs democratically and in favor of the poor. The assignment of 4% of the Gross Domestic Product to Education was a major factor for his favorable rating. 87% of those interviewed approve of the way he is handling education issues. Medina assigned 4% of GDP to public education, complying with the National Education Law that was passed during the first Leonel Fernandez government but never implemented during his 12 years in government nor by President Hipolito Mejia in his four-year term.
70% of the population approved his handling of the public health sector, 67% of the economic sector, and 50% his management of administrative corruption.
For the poll, 1,200 adults were polled nationwide. The error margin is estimated at 2.8%.
