More wind turbines

President Danilo Medina visited the southwest yesterday, Wednesday 30 January to inaugurate the second stage of the Los Cocos Wind Farm extending from Juancho in Pedernales north to Enriquillo in Barahona. EGE Haina has installed a further 26 wind turbines at a cost of US$100 million in addition to the 14 there since 2011, providing and additional 52 megawatts for an overall 77 megawatts of power. The wind turbines are each 125 meters, higher than the building of the Acropolis tower in Santo Domingo.

EGE Haina says the farm can generate enough power to provide 24-hour electricity to around 100,000 homes.

The general manager of the Haina Electricity Generating Company (EGE Haina), Tito Sanjurjo said that this type of energy is clean, does not harm the environment and avoid the emission of 200,000 tons of carbon dioxide each year. He said it also saved the country from importing 600,000 barrels of oil a year, with savings of US$66 million.

Sanjurjo proudly highlighted the fact that the contractors were able to keep the cost of construction at EUR1.7 million per megawatt, which is 11% below the global average for wind parks.
