Customs agents confiscated three firearms and other military munitions from US citizen Carmine Emmanuel Copola, aged 24, as he was trying to bring them into the country illegally.
Copola, who was arrested, was from New York, and a resident of Salinas in Bani. He had hidden the arms in a false-bottomed suitcase, covered with clothes and personal objects.
The confiscated weapons included a 40mm Glock pistol with two magazines and 12 rounds, a 12mm shotgun with 15 cartridges and a 22mm Mossberg rifle with 150 bullets.
According to initial information, Copola tried to bribe several customs officials when they found the weapons, but he was taken from Las Americas airport to the Customs Investigation Department where he said that he had brought the weapons in for hunting.
Nevertheless the customs and military authorities are still trying to establish why he brought the weapons in.
