Tons of food from Community Cafeterias

The translation of “Comedores Populares” is rather awkward, but the government and its low-cost cafeterias aimed at the country’s lowest income families, some of which are mobile units, serve up 2.3 million meals each month at undeniably low prices, reports El Caribe today, Monday 4 February. The performance of the agency run by Ramon Maria (Monchy) Rodriguez is serving 200,000 more meals a month than last year. The kitchens work with the Public Health Ministry and the Pan-American Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) to ensure that people receive the correct portions of nutritious food. The meals are prepared using mostly fresh products acquired at Mercafrio at Kilometer 22 of the Duarte Highway, and cost just RD$10 a serving. The cafeterias serve the main campus and the branches of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo as well as many of the country’s poorest neighborhoods and rural areas.
