The technical commission of the United Nations Development Program that will assess the proposed Loma Miranda mining project and produce a report, at the request of the Dominican government, arrives today in the country and will start working right away.
Valerie Julliand, resident UNDP coordinator in the Dominican Republic, said that the specialists would hold consultations with civil society, government officials and the project’s promoter, with the aim of collecting the information needed in order to express an objective opinion.
“We are going to receive, listen, and study all of the documents that any party wishes to give us in order to help with our work,” said Julliand, who added that they would keep the media informed about the scheduled meetings so that all interested parties may attend.
According to the UNDP website, today, Monday 4 February the commission will meet with Ministry of the Environment specialists at 10:30am and with mining company Falcondo at 4:30pm. Tomorrow, Tuesday 5 February they will visit Loma Miranda, while on Wednesday, 6 February it will be up to universities, academics and civil society representatives to express their opinions. On Thursday, 7 February they will see public authorities and hold a press conference.
