Fernandez lawyers deny Moreno’s complaint is being processed

Former President Leonel Fernandez’s legal adviser is denying that the state prosecutors have accepted the case filed by former National District prosecutor, politician Guillermo Moreno.

Fernandez’s defense team is headed by Radhames Jimenez, who served as Attorney General during the Fernandez administration. Jimenez said they would file a document to refute the claim presented by the president of Alianza Paiz Guillermo Moreno on 24 January against former President Fernandez and his Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (Funglode) for alleged asset laundering and prevarication.

The legal counsel said that the prosecutor’s office had simply complied with a procedure of formally notifying the parties of the complaint. The lawyers stressed that Fernandez has made nationally and internationally recognized contributions to Dominican society.

Yesterday, National District prosecutor Yeni Berenice Reynoso said that the case against the former President would receive the same treatment as other cases that are received at the office.

Guillermo Moreno is accusing Fernandez of appealing to businesses for high sums of money that were donated to the foundation. He says some of these companies were created by Fernandez himself, and directed by then-government official Felix Bautista. Bautista is now a senator for the ruling PLD party, of which Fernandez is president. Moreno filed documents to support his claim that Funglode received millions from public work contractors. He said that they made the donations in return for being awarded lucrative government contracts.

Moreno is asking the state prosecutors to request the tax declarations presented by Fernandez during his term as President. He also requests information from the commission that liquidated Baninter and the Central Bank on financial papers of Funglode with the Central Bank, and that the Tax Department issue details on the financial statements presented by Funglode.
