The Ministry of Public Works is conducting a joint study with the City Government (ADN) and the Water & Sewage Corporation (CAASD) to determine the cause of the collapse of a parking lot in the Los Prados neighborhood in Santo Domingo. At a press conference held yesterday, Thursday 14 February, Public Works Minister Gonzalo Castillo called for calm and said that the two homes that were affected were now out of danger.
He said that the sinkhole was filled with rocks on Wednesday, 13 February so that it could serve as drainage and prevent the neighboring property from sinking. He said that the Ministry would restore sidewalks so that traffic can resume in the area. The minister said this was a temporary solution while studies are carried out to establish underground water patterns in the Los Prados area.
He added that the Ministry of Public Works would be stricter when authorizing companies that carry out land studies and more demanding in the approval of these studies.
However, El Dia reports that despite the situation, builders in Los Prados continued their construction work on Amelia Francasci and Charles Sumner streets. As reported, the City Government ordered a freeze on issuing construction permits for the area and the suspension of construction works after the landslide at Calle Font Bernard on Friday, 8 February.
As reported in El Dia, Carlos Poblado of Epsa Labco, the company conducting the land study, said that the report would be prepared after testing of the kind of material at the site.
