Teachers at the state university UASD are by far the best-paid university professors in the Dominican Republic, but even so, on Thursday 14 February, they made sure to sign in (so the hours are paid) but did not enter the classrooms. The teachers union (Faprouasd) has announced a 48-hour strike in demand for a 45% wage increase, reported Listin Diario. Union president Ismael Peralta said they would negotiate for 20%, which could add up to an additional RD$540 million for the university that is funded by taxpayer money. Peralta said that 99% of teachers at the Santo Domingo main campus and 100% at the regional branches had joined the strike.
Rector Mateo Aquino Febrillet said that he is open to a wage increase, but the amount would be determined after the health provider service (ARS-UASD) renewal is completed.
