Demonstrations begin for Bahia de las Aguilas

Environmental and social organizations in the Dominican Republic have begun to work with individual citizens in demonstrations aimed at getting President Danilo Medina to revoke the decision to purchase lands from alleged “property owners” around the Bahia de las Aguilas in the south west of the country.

According to El Nuevo Diario, a rally at the Parque Independencia in central Santo Domingo took place over the weekend where individuals and groups declared their commitment to the campaign that they described as “a fight against corruption and impunity.” In a document given to reporters the campaigners said that they had come together to put a stop to the plan to hand over Bahia de las Aguilas to corrupt individuals. During the protest, journalist Huchi Lora handed out pieces of a symbolic cake to demonstrate what the government proposed to do.

The Supreme Court has set a 4 March date for the hearing on the case from claimants to legitimate ownership in the vicinity of Bahia de las Aguilas in Pedernales.

The executive vice president of the National Hotels & Tourism Association (Asonahores) Arturo Villanueva denied that the leading tourism organization had a position on the government’s decision to pay off the people engaged in the legal dispute on the grounds that it would give a green light to tourism development in the province, as reported in Listin Diario.

Environmentalists and journalists are demanding that instead of the announced deal, the judiciary must annul property titles that are proven as fraudulent.

El Caribe columnist Ramon Colombo suggested a name change for the Bahia de las Aguilas to Bahia de los Buitres, or Bay of the Vultures.

In an editorial today, Monday 18 February Diario Libre says that the only thing that can be learned from the announced Bahia de las Aguilas deal is that the Dominican justice system does not work.

PLD senator for Peravia province, Wilton Guerrero, who as director of the Dominican Agrarian Institute led the case against the fraudulent title holders, expressed his opposition to the announced government deal, and called on President Danilo Medina to refrain from legalizing fraud, as reported in Diario Libre.
