President Danilo Medina, continuing his program of surprise visits, visited Barahona yesterday, Sunday 17 February, where he promised the 65 members of the Association of Women for Progress in La Bomba some RD$3.75 million to expand their tilapia fish farming project. The loan would be at just 3% interest with an 18-month grace period. The funding from the Special Farming Development Fund (FEDA) will be used to increase the number of cages for the ponds from 20 to 50 and for the construction of a processing and packing center that will increase the quality of the processed fish. Medina told the women that he could not give them the money even if he wanted to, as this would leave the government without funds to help other people.
