Every weekend in February is carnival in the Dominican Republic, with the biggest displays now going on Sunday afternoons in La Vega (diablos cojuelos), Bonao (diablos cojuelos) and Santiago (lechones). There is also carnival in the smallest towns – Montecristi (toros, civiles), Puerto Plata, Salcedo, Cotui (Platanuses, papeluses) on Sundays. In Samana and Rio San Juan (Maria Trinidad Sanchez province) carnivals, maritime motifs take prevalence. The Rio San Juan Carnival will be 21-24 February. And then in March, the best parading groups come south to strut their stuff in the carnivals of Santo Domingo on the Malecon on Sunday, 3 March, and other places such as Punta Cana (Sunday, 9 March) and La Romana (23 March). Check for Carnival parades also on Wednesday, 27 February, like the one that is scheduled for Puerto Plata.
