The Dominican population in the United States is estimated at 1,528,000 according to statistics released by the Hispanic Research Center of the Pew Institute, a Washington think tank. Over thirty three million Hispanics live in the United States, of which Mexicans make up nearly 65%. There was no reference to the legal status of either the Dominicans or the other Hispanic residents. According to the study, Dominicans are the fifth largest group of Latinos in the US, represented in nearly every state of the Union. Some of the statistics are based on the 2010 Census. In New York City, Dominicans are the largest group after Puerto Ricans and ahead of Mexicans. But overall, Dominicans are the fifth largest Hispanic group. First in numbers are Mexicans with 33.5 million (65%), followed by Puerto Ricans with 4.9 million (9%), Salvadorans with 2 million (4%), Cubans with 1.9 million (4%) and then Dominicans with 1.5 million (3%).
