American Airlines and US Airways officially announced their merge on Thursday, 14 February. Once the largest carrier to the Dominican Republic, American continues to transport local passengers. While American Airlines announced it was cancelling its routes from JFK International to Santiago and Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic with the last flight on 1 April 2013, its Miami and San Juan, Puerto Rico routes will remain in place. The airline is promoting the merge with US Airways on its newly designed website. The new airline will be known as American.
On the website, American is promoting its flights to SDQ/La Guardia flights for US$463. But this flight involves a connection through Miami. The airline also offers its SDQ/MCO (Orlando) for US$392 (also required a stopover in Miami) and Santo Domingo non-stop flight to Miami and others with a connection through San Juan, Puerto Rico. The airline informed that Dominicans who have Frequent Flyer miles with American Airlines could continue to use them for the Miami and San Juan, Puerto Rico flights (US$385) and on the extensive American Airlines-One World network of airlines. There is speculation US Airways passengers that are now affiliated with the Star Alliance will be merged into the One World alliance.
