Doctors on strike in La Romana

Following a show of hands at a meeting, the National Executive Council of the Dominican Medical Association (CMD) has declared a strike at the Gustavo A. Gonzalvo hospital in La Romana in protest at the lack of medical supplies.

CMD president Amarilis Herrera said that their members would only respond to emergencies but that elective procedures and consultations are suspended until the Ministry of Health sends supplies to the hospital, where at the moment there are no syringes or drips for treating patients.

She warned that what is happening in La Romana is a clear sign that the national public health system has collapsed and that the government and the Health Ministry should implement clear policies designed to deliver a better health service to the people of La Romana.

She apologized to the local population, saying that the biggest lack of supplies was in the area of surgery, pediatrics, gynecology and internal medicine.
