The Conference of the Dominican Episcopate met yesterday, Wednesday 20 February and called for the Dominican government to act with political will to defend national assets, especially natural resources and the ecosystem from foreign and national investors that threaten them indiscriminately and against the common good. In a message marking the 169th anniversary of National Independence and the Bicentenary of the birth of Juan Pablo Duarte, the bishops focused on the issue especially now with the media spotlight on the case of the protected areas in the southwest. The Episcopate also said that there is a need to bring order to citizen safety systems and rid the Armed Forces of corruption and complicity with drug trafficking and crime.
