There has been a wave of nighttime robberies on the highway from Santo Domingo to Samana, specifically at the crossroads of Monte Plata and Bayaguana and at the entrance to the community of Gonzalo.
The robberies have been reported occurring after the last tollbooth, some nine kilometers from the end of the highway where it links Nagua and Samana. Victims have said that the robbers are armed. Juan Monsanto from Rio San Juan said that he and two friends were driving home when they were attacked near the entrance to Bayaguana. The four armed robbers took cash, jewelry, cell phones and three suitcases full of clothes, and when they left they shot the tires of the vehicle.
Other victims, including an evangelical priest, have said that the robbers escape on the dirt roads that run off both sides of the highway, usually on motorcycles.
