Singer Martha Heredia was arrested last night, Wednesday 20 February with over a kilo of a substance presumed to be heroin, when she was trying to catch a flight to New York from Cibao International Airport in Santiago.
Heredia, who has been involved in a gender violence case against the rap singer Vakero since January, was arrested by members of the Specialized Airport Security Corps, accompanied by an assistant prosecutor when her suitcase went through the X-ray machine in the terminal. News reports said she had a suspicious substance in the heels of the shoes she was wearing and in other shoes in her suitcase.
Roberto Lebron, spokesman for the National Drug Control Agency (DNCD), said that Martha Heredia was taken to DNCD headquarters, together with the substance that will be analyzed and weighed today. She will also be screened to see if she is carrying drugs in her stomach.
Speaking to Listin Diario by phone, Lebron said that Heredia would be interviewed today, Thursday 21 February and then taken back to Santiago for a court hearing to determine whether she will be remanded in custody or have bail.
Heredia shot to fame when she won “Latin American Idol” in 2009.
