Medina meets lawyer Acosta to discuss Bahia de las Aguilas

Several government departments and the judiciary have the documentation, but President Danilo Medina invited lawyer Laura Acosta to personally explain the reasons for opposing his decision to cut a deal with the people claiming to be rightful property owners in the Bahia de las Aguilas area of Pedernales. The meeting came after her uncle, TV and radio communicator Huchi Lora, took part in a meeting with President Danilo Medina and government proponents of the deal at the Presidential Palace on Tuesday, 19 February.

Huchi Lora said that nothing new was said during the meeting, but the President was able to hear the details from his niece who is the daughter of Piky Lora, the lawyer who originally prosecuted the people who obtained the fraudulent titles in 1995-1996.

Acosta said that she told the President that the Dominican state is the only legal landowner. She said the President listened carefully but did not express an opinion. She believes that if the government goes ahead with the deal this would not be sustainable in time, given all the irregularities.

Acosta also pointed out that the legal delays in this case are the fault of state prosecutors who have continually requested postponements in court.
